cobbled road

most of the roads in the old city part of istanbul (and most other cities we visited) were paved with cobble stones in a pattern like you see here. i thought it looked a lot nicer than the blacktop roads i’m used to, though probably more difficult to skate on. you can also see the stone gutters (which we later saw in action) and the chess pawn shaped things that kept cars off the sidewalks. the pawns were only in istanbul if i remember right. where there weren’t pawns to prevent it there were often cars parked on the sidewalk.
