song tracking

track7 can keep track of what song you are listening to in winamp 5, winamp 2, xmms, or any other player that can request a web page every time a new song starts playing.  instructions for winamp 5 or 2 setup are below, with instructions for xmms below that.  to use another player, you will probably need to change the url listed in the winamp setup so that the stuff like %%URL_CURRENTSONGTITLE%% are recognized by your player.

winamp 5 or 2 setup

  1. get the do something plugin and install it.  the download you want is the binary distribution (pimp installer).
  2. open up winamp, go to preferences and choose general purpose under plug-ins, then select do something in the list on the right.
  3. click the configure button to get the do something configuration window.
  4. make sure “disable plugin” is not checked.
  5. select “submit a url” in the actions dropdown.
  6. enter the following url in the url field that shows up after selecting "submit a url" -- make sure to replace <SECRET> with your actual password.

this feature is for registered users only, and you are not logged in.  you will need to log in or register before you can use this feature..

  7. click the add button and then the ok button.
  8. play a song, then look at your profile!

xmms setup

  1. xmms comes with a generic song change plugin, which basically runs anything.  to give it something to run, copy the following code into a script, named something like songtrack.pl, and make sure it has execute permissions (chmod 755 songtrack.pl).

this feature is for registered users only, and you are not logged in.  you will need to log in or register before you can use this feature..

  2. be sure to replace <SECRET> in the file with your actual password.
  3. open up xmms, go to preferences and choose general plugins, then select song change from the list.
  4. make sure the enable plugin box is checked, then click the configure button to get the song change configuration window.
  5. in the first command box (under song change, not playlist end), enter /path/to/songtrack.pl %l "%s" and click ok.
  6. play a song, then look at your profile!

Found my old songtracker files, and I was trying to use two different plugins. Since dosomething isn't being developed anymore... One is: http://whatsplaying.sourceforge.net/ and the other is: http://people.cc.jyu.fi/~ltnevala/nowplaying/
I see the second one has been upgraded too, nice flash graphs on their page.  And lots more info tags too. They stole my name tho, amptracker. :(
I think one of them used to be able to send through $_POST, which I kinda liked better than info in the url. Well, just thought maybe you'd find this useful. :)

welcome to track7!
