pen / pencil sketch gallery

the following are most of the pen and pencil sketches i've done throughout my years (and haven't thrown out or lost).  the newest ones are at the top, as best as i can remember when i drew them.  the previews don't show the whole sketch -- click on them to bring up a large version.

i can't even remember how long ago it was that i made this sketch.  what i do know is that it's from the liner notes of the prodigal sons' return cd, where i believe it had a bunch of thank-yous printed over it.  i sketched this in pencil in a sketch pad at somewhere around 10 inches wide -- it's one of very few sketches i've actually done on paper meant for sketching!

this was drawn inside the back cover of a notebook (not my calculus notebook) with a pencil.  i had a real rose, and i looked at it to draw this.  though i drew this sometime back in high school, i ended up using it about four years later on the inside cover of a cd i made for the girl who has since become my wife.  right now this is the only scan of it i could find, and it's possible that i don't have the notebook anymore, but if i come across it i'll put up a bigger image.

when we were learning the french words for arm, leg, head, and other parts of the body, we got an assignment to get a picture of a person and label the body parts.  most people cut a picture from a magazine, but i decided to draw my own.  my person is the supertones guy, from the cover of their first album, "adventures of the o.c. supertones." you will probably notice french words labeling parts of the sketch.  the sketch is in pencil, filled in with colored pencil, and the french labels are added using pen.

i sketched this inside the front cover of my calculus notebook.  since it was done in pencil, scanners seemed to have a hard time getting it in without the pencil part reflecting too much light, so i actually ended up having to photocopy it and then scan in the copy.  i've used this guy as part of the logo for the site now, but without the "born lost and hopeless" banners.  his head is pretty much all over the site, and there used to be more of him on the main page.

over the summer of 2000 i was working a job where i sat at a computer desk and watched functional tests run on electronic equipment.  to keep myself occupied, i started drawing whatever i could come up with on the paper 'travelers' with my black pen.  this is just a bunch of swords.  they are actually on pink paper, but i used saturation, brightness, and contrast filters on the scan to get it to just black and white.
