i think tonight i’ll have both the time and the lack of things i really want to record on tv such that i can take apart my “server” hecubus and put it back together with the parts i have left over after upgrading my workstation (and the new sata drives i got for it).  i’ve been using ext3 for my /boot and / partitions and reiserfs (v3) for my storage partitions, but i think i’m going to try out xfs this time instead.  i’ll also be going from 3 hdds to 2:  an 80-gig pata and a 400-gig sata.  i’m also going to break off /home and /backup from / this time.  here’s the plan:

  • /boot - 100 meg, ext3
  • (swap) - 2 gig, swap
  • / - 20 gig, ext3
  • (backup) - 20 gig, ext3
  • /home - remaining 80-gig space, ext3
  • (storage) - entire 400-gig drive, xfs

i was using ext3 before for everything that’s listed ext3 here.  xfs is coming in for where i was using reiserfs.  i plan to install with reiserfs and xfs support at first, then rsync everything over from the old storage drives to the new one, then reinstall without reiserfs.  i should be able to temporarily copy my /home and any other important stuff to the new drive as well.

i’m also going 64-bit this time, so hopefully that won’t pose me any significant problems either!

it’s up and running — i think all i have left to do is set up the database for the neighborhood site on my test server.  being 64-bit doesn’t seem to be any problem — the most difficult part was actually nuvexport to convert mythtv recordings to xvid without commercials.  apparently in the new mythtv version (0.21) there’s some sort of dependency on net::upnp in perl, which yum doesn’t know about and so doesn’t install.  to get around the problem i just had to symlink a file (it said to install the perl module or copy the file, and since the perl module isn't in yum anyway, i copied the file).

i went with the partitioning scheme i mentioned above, and since i had one more spot on the ide controller, i put one of my zip drives in there.  now to find the disks, and occasionally back stuff op to zip disks!

also, i’ll eventually be updating my linux server setup guide since some stuff changed going to fedora 9.
