dougall, my main workstation, gave up the boot over the weekend. i don't usually shut it down because it has a tv tuner card in it, and if it's shut down it won't record tv for me. but saturday night i shut it down because it didn't have anything to record until sunday night, but sure enough once sunday morning came around it wouldn't boot. i'm almost completely sure the problem is the motherboard, since lights, fans, and drives all power up, but the video card never initializes. i also tried putting in different video cards, and that didn't change anything either. the motherboard was already having problems in that if the power went out, it wouldn't boot up unless i cleared cmos (i avoided this problem by just leaving the cmos battery out, which meant i had to go into bios and set everything again whenever the computer lost power). i went looking for a socket 478 motherboard, since that's what dougall is using right now, but they don't really make those anymore. all i could find were micro atx boards, which don't have enough pci slots for me. and i have a new 20.1" lcd coming soon! so this turned into a reason to upgrade my computer, so the motherboard is going up to lga 775, cpu from pentium 4 to pentium d, and memory from ddr to ddr2. i won't be able to run the memory dual-channel at first since i'm only buying one stick, and i'm also going to be using the onboard video since my agp 8x card isn't going to work in the new board's pcie slot and i wanted to keep the cost down as much as i could for now. i have my eye on this geforce 7300gt though -- maybe after a few more months! edited by misterhaan, 9:52:01 am, apr 03, 2008 please note that the above post is likely made up in its entirety. |

i now have tesla up and running, which is mostly dougall's parts, but enough of it changed that i had to reinstall windows, which meant i had to delete my linux partitions. linux actually told me there was an error starting x, then asked if i wanted to try to fix it. it brought me to a configuration window, where i told it what my video card (built-in for now) and monitor are, and then everything just worked. windows just rebooted the computer when i tried to start that. edited by misterhaan, 6:39:42 pm, apr 23, 2007 please note that the above post is likely made up in its entirety. |
